REPORT: LED’s Buy Greener – Shedding Light on Sustainable Procurement
The International Environmental Institute, IIIEE, at Lund Unviersity, publish their latest research regarding environmental impacts in the life-cycle of LED, as well as a review of the decision-making process in partner municipalities when procuring lighting solutions. The report provides important knowledge and recommendations to improve decision making for sustainable lighting solutions.
The publication is the collective work of both students and staff engaged in the Lighting Metropolis project at IIIEE.

REVIEW: Procedures for investigating effects of lighting for pedestrians
One of the aims of outdoor lighting in public spaces, such as pathways and subsidiary roads, is to help pedestrians to evaluate the intentions of other people. This paper discusses how a pedestrians’ appraisal of another persons’ intentions in artificially lit outdoor environments can be studied. We review the visual cues that might be used, and the experimental design with which effects of changes in lighting could be investigated to best resemble the pedestrian experience in artificially lit urban environments.

Dynamic lighting study
This Lighting Metropolis study was conducted as part of a wider Scandinavian focus to become a regional market leader in intelligent lighting solutions. It’s a collaboration between Survey Party and ProLab, which is part of Lund University where the test beds for three dynamic lighting fixtures have been placed and have been active since March 2016. Furthermore, ProLab and Lund University have been active in spreading these findings and early realised the gains of a human focused lighting. Another major contributor has been the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), which has helped to measure the new lighting.

The world’s brightest cities
In a new international benchmark study, conducted by Copenagen Capacity that analyses the best perfoming cities within a range of lighting criterias, Greater Copenhagen takes a prominent 3rd position.
The overall aim of the analyses was to locate cities around the world that make sense for our partner group to conduct field & study trips to, as part of the project’s work. The initial search resulted in 351 cities across 81 countries, whereafter CopCap applied additional criterias, such as memberships in relevant organisations, certain categories for ongoing or planned projects, availability of research insitutions.
This resulted in a reduction to our final 27 cities, spread across 15 countries and 4 continents. Please read the report for further details about the methodology used in this analyses.

Circle of light – the impact of LED’s lifecycle
14 students at IIIEE, Lund University, have over the past term reviewed the sustainability aspects of LED’s lifecycle, from the extraction of resources to manufacturing, distribution, use and end-of-life process – and present it here.
The review is the first step in making the processes and environmental impact behind production, distribution and usage of LED more open and transparent, with the ambition to create clear guidelines & recommendations for commisioners of LED at a municipal level during 2017.
